Privacy policy

Last updated: 2026-10-03

PastShot is operated by widewell. This policy explains what happens to data when you play. In short: no accounts, no cookies, and no advertising trackers.

Data stored on your device

Your game progress (streak, past scores and the date of your last visit) is saved in your browser's local storage. It stays on your device. Clearing your browser data deletes it.

Anonymous usage statistics

To understand how the game is used, your browser sends anonymous events when you start a puzzle, submit a guess, press share, or come back on a later day. Each event contains only: the event type, puzzle number, interface language, whether it is an archive puzzle, your score rounded to a 1,000-point band, the number of days since your previous visit, and the country inferred by our CDN. We do not store IP addresses, browser identifiers or any ID that links events to you. Events are kept for up to 400 days and used only in aggregate.

Guesses

Your guess (a year and a map position) is sent to our server to calculate your score. We do not store your guess, only the rounded score band described above.

Service providers

The site runs on Google Cloud (hosting, database and statistics storage, in the United States) and is delivered through Cloudflare (content delivery and protection against abuse). These providers process your IP address to deliver the site. Our hosting provider's standard request logs include IP addresses; they are kept for up to 30 days for security and troubleshooting and are not used for statistics.
